A 25 de Novembro de 1970, o mundo era surpreendido com a notícia e as imagens do suicídio ritual do escritor Yukio Mishima (nascido em 1925 como o nome de Hiraoka Kimitake). Mishima, um dos mais notáveis escritores japoneses do pós-guerra, desenvolvera durante um quarto de século uma prolífica actividade como romancista, dramaturgo, actor e realizador de cinema, e assumira-se como uma das vozes mais críticas da modernização acelerada do Japão, que se tornara particularmente notória durante os anos sessenta. O seu suicídio foi uma forma de protestar contra aquilo que ele considerava a descaracterização da milenar civilização nipónica.
